The Cardrona Valley is well known not only as hosting the popular alpine pass route, the Crown Range, between Wanaka and Queenstown, and it’s nearby Cardrona Alpine Ski Resort, but also for it’s much photographed local Cardrona Hotel, which was more recently made famous locally by the advertising campaign of the Speight’s brewery of Dunedin.
The valley has a colourful history going back to the gold rush days of the 1860s. when the population rose to 3000, including a very significant proportion of Chinese miners.
The town was surveyed and constructed with eight hotels and six stores. All that is left now is the frontage of the hotel (backed by more recently constructed facilities and rooms built in the style appropriate to same), with the much-loved Cardrona Hall and Church nearby, the location of the annual Cardrona Folk Music Festival.
